The purpose of this 24-hour training, a part of the 5000 series, is to certify individuals who are equipped and prepared to inspect and repair multiple types of backflow prevention assemblies. Trainees will review the technical aspects and correct applications of each of the following assemblies: RPZ (1013), DC (1015), PVB (1020), SRVB (1056). Applying prior knowledge, the technician will learn to disassemble and reassemble all types of assemblies. After completing this course, trainees will be prepared to inspect and repair multiple types of backflow prevention assemblies.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, trainees will be able to…

  • Review principles of backflow prevention and cross connection control
  • Review each type of assembly, including RPZs, DCs, PVBs and SRVBs
  • Identify failures and proper course of corrective action
  • Become aware of all tools and procedures for proper repair of backflow prevention assemblies
  • Learn and practice repair for all types of assemblies from a variety of manufacturers (hands-on)

     

    Assessment

    Trainees are expected to pass a practical exam consisting of the disassembly and reassembly of at least four assemblies consisting of at least one RP [2 ½ inches or larger], one DC [2 ½ inches or larger], one PVB [1 ½ inch or larger] and one SRVB [3/4 inch or larger]. Assemblies shall be of different makes and models. 

    Trainees must also pass a 50-question exam with a score of 70% or higher.

    Eligibility for Fire University's 5130 certification course for Backflow Repairers is available only to individuals who possess a current BACKFLOW TESTER CERTIFICATION (ASSE 5110).

    Fire University reviews each field technician’s form for completeness and verifies the work and education history provided. No applicant will be admitted should their form not meet the eligibility requirements.
